PDFs not appearing in search result

  • Hey,

I've been using this extension since the summer, and with great success. However, recently I discovered that PDF files (or documents with PDF attachments) will no longer appear in search results. This happens with "Limit File Types" set to "Allow All", and both with and without "Search in File Contents" enabled. Other files, such as pictures (JPG, JPEG) appear with file contents enabled. The search URL I'm using is https://site-url.com/?s=search+term

I have tried the same search term in the sandbox area in the admin panel, and here everything works as expected. The document with the PDF attachment appears as the third search result.

I suspect this happened in an update to the plugin, as no configuration change was made as far as I know. The current version installed is v2.46.180

Does anyone have any idea of what's going on?

  • Hi @blixhavn

Do you remember which plugins you've installed recently? Some of them may conflict with WPFTS Pro, especially when making a search at the front end. Please try to disable those plugins temporarily.

If it does not help, let's connect with TeamViewer so I can solve this issue faster (write me a private message or via Live Chat at the main page).

    Hi @stark

Unfortunately, WPFTS does not work with PODS custom fields "from the box", so custom code exists somewhere. I think your developer used another way to add data to the search index.

We need to ask him or alternatively, I could check your code myself, it should not be too long. In this case please send me admin access to your resource using a private message.

    Thanks.

    Hi, @Amine
The WPFTS Pro version you are using is very outdated. Please consider upgrading to 2.46.x which is the latest. It has a completely new indexing and searching algorithm and it should solve your issue.

    Hi @davide-merlitti

It happens because you have problems with wp-cron tasks or DNS configuration.

If you have your website hosted locally, often the domain name is just recorded in /etc/hosts file. This is normally okay for browser access (and this is why indexing is coming well but slow when your WP admin is open). But PHP can not read /etc/hosts by some reason and thus indexing procedure can not go internally.

Please read this solution and try it.

Please let me know if it helps or not.

    Thanks!

    Hi, Vasiliki

    Thank you for the question!

Yes, initially WPFTS Pro was only able to search within files that are included in WP Media Library. We are developing an addon currently which will enable search by any file or file directory.

ETA of the test version is 25 Apr 2020.
