The WPFTS Pro version you are using is very outdated. Please consider upgrading to 2.46.x which is the latest. It has a completely new indexing and searching algorithm and it should solve your issue.

Thanks for the update.

It didn't work at first but I found the problem. The WPFTS Add-on for WP Download Manager wasn't passing the $is_enable_external_links parameter to GetCachedFileContent_ByLocalLink, so it wasn't indexing the WPDMPRO external files.

I changed that, and it did index everything. However, the performance on the WPDMPRO front-end pages was unbelievably slow. It turned out, it was reindexing every file any time it's post was viewed through the front end. So, I set $is_force_reindex to false in the call to GetCachedFileContent_ByLocalLink, and that seemed to fix it.

I don't know whether the changes I made to my copy of the the WPFTS Add-on for WP Download Manager were correct, but there are definitely some changes required there to make this work.

It does appear that this functionality will work as long as WPFTS Add-on for WP Download Manager is updated.

It happens because you have problems with wp-cron tasks or DNS configuration.

If you have your website hosted locally, often the domain name is just recorded in /etc/hosts file. This is normally okay for browser access (and this is why indexing is coming well but slow when your WP admin is open). But PHP can not read /etc/hosts by some reason and thus indexing procedure can not go internally.

Please read this solution and try it.

Hmm, I just installed Extra Theme 4.9.7 on my machine and it works well with WPFTS Pro's latest version.

Could you please check the error.log on your server and find something related to this error there? Or send to me please last lines, maybe I can find the reason for the issue.

Also please try to switch ON debug mode in your wp-config.php, it may show you some message before 504 error.

Yes, the algorithm thinks the number of words here is more important than the exact phrase... Ideally, if we could justify the relative weight for the phrase matches. Currently, it's too low for your case, but I think if we can double it, this could solve the issue.

I just made a short check for Google Search results' appearance and I found that they are trying to extend the excerpt by other (not "good") sentences even there is only one "good" sentence and it's short (your case #1).

So yes, I think it would be a great idea to add one or two other sentences near the result to give more context information to the user.

At the same time, I know that some developers still want to keep excerpts as short as possible to keep more space on the screen for other results. So I think it will be a configurable option in WPFTS Settings.

Also, I would like to add a configurable option to put a text like "...other 5 appearances" at the end of the excerpt. Thanks for the idea!

We also have some other things to play with Smart Excerpts (for example, lots of developers asked me to add page numbers in case an excerpt was taken from the paged document), so I guess it will add those features one-by-one.

Also, the documentation for the plugin requires a sufficient upgrade, and I definitely will include this explanation there.
